No doubt you have heard by now of the “war on women,” but it’s not all about contraceptives and abortion. It’s also about women’s economic opportunity.
Two programs designed specifically to help women earn wages that will bring economic security — including in good-paying occupations where they currently are only a minority of job holders — are on the chopping block – the Women’s Bureau and the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) program. Both the President’s budget and legislation introduced by Rep. Virginia Foxx (D-NC) would do away with WANTO. And the Obama budget would close four of ten regional Women’s Bureau offices. Since 1920, the Women’s Bureau has been the “voice of wage-earning women” in the Department of Labor and throughout the country.
